Under the Surface

Each summer, young explorers from Northwest Passage set out for adventures that few have experienced. They bravely submerge themselves in rivers and lakes to learn about and document underwater ecosystems. The stunning photographs that result from these expeditions have been featured in books, films, and witnessed by over one million people at exhibits around the United States. These photographs represent the kids' exploration and discovery of the underwater world, and of themselves.

"Lying" by Star, 13 | Under the Surface 2021

Nothing could have prepared me for the invisible hands withholding me from a secret I’ve yet to know. Pushing through the crowd, left to right, up to down, but no matter what, the glass wall held me back from the truth. Refusing to let me see past the lies. The curiosity burned through my skin, leaving rosy marks on my snow-like cheeks. My heart gripping on to the only hope that was left, trying to rip through my chest to get a closer look. The lies burying me got louder, twisting their words to make me believe it. I couldn’t believe it. I wouldn’t believe it. But as the words imprinted in on my brain, a new idea sprouted from ground sprinkled with ashes. What if they weren’t lying…..
