Under the Surface

They bravely submerge themselves in rivers and lakes to learn about and document underwater ecosystems. The stunning photographs that result from these expeditions have been featured in books, films, and witnessed by over one million people at exhibits around the United States. These photographs represent the kids' exploration and discovery of the underwater world, and of themselves.

"Fish Tail" by Gabe, 16 | Under the Surface 2021
The space around me is quiet and still. The fish has abilities of its own when under the surface. I see it swim away freely. I can read its thoughts, as the fish can read mine. This is my fish, it sees what I see and feels what I feel. As the fish swims away I feel pride. After all, the water the fish swims in is home to us.
