Under the Surface
Each summer, young explorers from Northwest Passage set out for adventures that few have experienced. They bravely submerge themselves in rivers and lakes to learn about and document underwater ecosystems. The stunning photographs that result from these expeditions have been featured in books, films, and witnessed by over one million people at exhibits around the United States. These photographs represent the kids' exploration and discovery of the underwater world, and of themselves.

Floating through life
It’s dark, then it’s bright
Fright, I’m like every other fish
With a story and just one wish
About the artist: "I’m 16 and I came to Northwest Passage because a judge ordered me here. I was so mad my first day and ignored almost everybody. As time went on, I thought, I guess this place is okay. I loved underwater photography. It was all new to me and a little scary. I had never snorkeled in a wet suit or seen a crayfish so close. I loved swimming on the hot days. It was super refreshing. The crayfish were scary but I got over it because I’m built different. I will never forget underwater photography. I wouldn’t take those days back if I could."
