
Under the Surface
Each summer, young explorers from Northwest Passage set out for adventures that few have experienced. They bravely submerge themselves in rivers and lakes to learn about and document underwater ecosystems. The stunning photographs that result from these expeditions have been featured in books, films, and witnessed by over one million people at exhibits around the United States. These photographs represent the kids' exploration and discovery of the underwater world, and of themselves.

"Float" by Payton, 15 | Under the Surface 2020
I was afraid when I first went into the river, but the water taught me that it’s okay to just be myself. When I trusted the water to help me float, I let go of my fear. I began seeing the fish, sponges, and underwater flowers. I forgot that I was afraid.
About the artist: Payton was part of In a New Light, a therapeutic nature photography program at Northwest Passage. This program emphasizes skilled expressive arts training and nature immersion, ultimately empowering youth who are struggling with mental health issues to find beauty in the world that surrounds them, and in themselves. Payton wrote in her journal, “The water taught me that it’s okay to be scared. Nobody is perfect.”
