Under the Surface
"Spiritual Water" by Destini, 16 | Under the Surface 2020
Today I released a tobacco leaf into spiritual water where my Ojibwa ancestors once were at war against North Dakota…
I’m floating
The current is coming
Down the river
Cold water shivering
Shiver in the river
About the artist: “When I’m underwater searching for creatures in the underworld, I’ve never had so much fun,” writes Destini in her reflection journal. Destini was part of In a New Light, a therapeutic nature photography program at Northwest Passage. This program emphasizes skilled expressive arts training and nature immersion, ultimately empowering youth who are struggling with mental health issues to find beauty in the world that surrounds them, and in themselves. “It’s okay to be scared at first. It’s okay to not know how to do something. Just try.” writes Destini.
