Under the Surface
Each summer, young explorers from Northwest Passage set out for adventures that few have experienced. They bravely submerge themselves in rivers and lakes to learn about and document underwater ecosystems. The stunning photographs that result from these expeditions have been featured in books, films, and witnessed by over one million people at exhibits around the United States. These photographs represent the kids' exploration and discovery of the underwater world, and of themselves.

"The Mussel Waits" by Anna, 16 | Under the Surface 2021
This mussel waits minutes, hours, maybe even days for a fish to come. Ready to give her babies so they will grow. Once she sends them, the fish takes them and swims away, she says “go mussels, go grow!”
About Anna: "During my time Under the Surface I learned about how the water calms me and how it makes me forget about all the stuff above the surface. My favorite place to visit was the Apostle Islands because the lake looks like an ocean. From the lures of the mussels to the nets of the caddisfly - there is so much more under the water than I realized."
