Under the Surface
Each summer, young explorers from Northwest Passage set out for adventures that few have experienced. They bravely submerge themselves in rivers and lakes to learn about and document underwater ecosystems. The stunning photographs that result from these expeditions have been featured in books, films, and witnessed by over one million people at exhibits around the United States. These photographs represent the kids' exploration and discovery of the underwater world, and of themselves.

"Moving a Mussel" by Tucker, 16 | Under the Surface 2014
This photo was really hard to get. I wanted to get a picture of a mussel moving using its foot, but it would always pull its foot back in every time I got close. So I sat and waited and sat perfectly still for five minutes. He finally got used to me or something or forgot I was there because he finally stuck his foot out and kept moving. I felt very accomplished.
About Tucker: "Hi, my name is Tucker and I'm 16. I've been through some really challenging things in my life, and I've made a lot of really bad decisions. I hope I can turn things around before it's too late. I love being underwater taking pictures. It's the most relaxing thing for me and always puts me in a good mood."
