Under the Surface

Each summer, young explorers from Northwest Passage set out for adventures that few have experienced. They bravely submerge themselves in rivers and lakes to learn about and document underwater ecosystems. The stunning photographs that result from these expeditions have been featured in books, films, and witnessed by over one million people at exhibits around the United States. These photographs represent the kids' exploration and discovery of the underwater world, and of themselves.

Into the water I went
Washing away the pain the scars left
I watched the memories float down the stream
Away from my thoughts, away from me
Submerged in the peaceful currents
I let myself go for just a moment
As I rose up out of the water
The sun seemed to shine brighter
I knew I was going to be okay

About the artist: "I came to Northwest Passage because I was having issues at home and at school. The State thought being here would be helpful for me and my family. InaNewLight has been an amazing experience. I have never felt as close to nature as when I’m taking pictures of it. Before I came to Northwest Passage I felt like my written words weren’t appreciated. But here, when I write my photo reflections I feel good about myself because the people here do appreciate them and they give me so much support."
