In 2010, a teacher at Northwest Passage and professional photographer, Ben Thwaits, brought to life his idea of using nature photography as a therapeutic outlet. These photographs represent the beginning of a program that has impacted hundreds of children, helping them find beauty in the world around them, and within themselves.

"My Mother's Teardrop" by Dakota, 14 | The Pioneers
Everybody cries. They cry for the sake of things like hate or stupidity. My mom cries because of me. I guess that’s because of her pure love for me. I think it’s wrong to make someone cry, even if it’s not intentional, and that’s what this picture reminds me of. It reminds me of all the tears my mom has shed over me—tears of joy, hurt, and sorrow.
